In old days it were the fishermen who established the community. It was a village untill the glorieus Atlantic crossing with the Bom Succeso, crewed by local fishermen, to tell the Portugese king that Napoleon´s army had been defeated and it was safe to return to Portugal. Then Olhão became a town and nowadays it is refered to as “Shellfish Capital” or “Cubist Town” as the fishing industry and influences from North Africa are clearly seen. But the old style still exists.
On the quay you will find two red brick market buildings, these house a huge variety of fish, seafood, fruit, vegetables, etc. and are the heart and soul of the town. The sights, sounds and smells of this building are amazing with fish of all shapes, sizes and colours, together with Octopus, Squid and Cuttlefish.
Both markets are surrounded by small cafes where you can sit in the shade of the brightly coloured umbrellas while overlooking the marina and in the distance the Ria Formosa National Park and it´s islands. On the other side of the street, all along the waterfront you will find a multitude of restaurants, bars and cafes who serve you anything from delicious fresh seafood to a cold beer or coffee.
The main church Nossa Senhora do Rosario dates from the 17th century and is the towns most prominent building and is situated right in the heart of the town. It is open Tuesday – Sunday 09.30 – 12.00 and 15.00 – 18.00. If there was a storm at sea, the local fishermans wives and townswomen traditionally met at the back of the church, at the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos facing the Avenida da Republica where there would place strange limbs made of wax, light candles and pray for their mens safe return. Candles still burn there among the very odd collection of wax body parts.
